As well as panoramic prairie landscapes, I create carefully rendered stitched/quilted images of specific insects, trees, leaves or flowers – always from direct observation. By celebrating the small, delicate and vulnerable within the wide sweep of the prairies I am attempting to develop a general sense of “embeddedness” and interconnectedness between ourselves and the exceedingly complex ecosystem of which we are a part.

Some works are drawings done on the sewing machine with the object directly in front of me. Colored pencils or paint have been added as required. At other times I have started with a carefully rendered drawing which has then been translated into an appliquéd work using a variety of specially created painted fabrics, colored pencils, free-motion machine stitching and quilting.
